POLICING: Farmers Branch Police Chief addresses use-of-force practices

FBTX ~ In response to the national conversation on law enforcement, Farmers Branch Police Chief David Hale has immediately addressed, included or affirmed a number of practices included in the local department’s use-of-force policies:

  • Ban Chokeholds and Strangleholds | NEW
  • Duty to Intervene | NEW
  • Require De-Escalation | AFFIRMED
  • Exhaust All Alternatives Before Shooting | AFFIRMED
  • Ban Shooting at Moving Vehicles | AFFIRMED (unless to prevent officer’s serious bodily injury)
  • Establish Use of Force Continuum |AFFIRMED
  • Require All Force Be Reported | AFFIRMED
  • Require Use of Body Cameras | AFFIRMED
  • Require Implicit Bias Training | AFFIRMED
  • Require Warning Before Shooting | UNDER EVALUATION

   “The Farmers Branch Police Department is committed to serving every individual we encounter fairly and impartially and we are open to conversations that will lead to positive change for all,” Chief Hale said. “Our authority is given to us by the people and without their consent we cannot be successful in our mission of keeping our communities safe.”

   Chief Hale will be forming a Police Chief’s Advisory Council to help continue the ongoing analysis of policies, inclusion and dialogue, reflective of the community.
